The tone curve
The tone curve is a graphical representation of the distribution of tonal values in your image. It allows you to manipulate the brightness and contrast by adjusting the highlights, shadows, and mid-tones with incredible accuracy, making it the most powerful tool in your arsenal.
What are its parts?
Blacks: The bottom left corner of the curve represents the darkest parts of the image. Lifting it makes your image softer making images more dramatic.
Whites: The top right corner of the curve embodies the brightest parts of your photograph. It is often used to manipulate the overall brightness of the image.
Shadows: The left side of the tone curve represents the shadows, the darker areas in your image. By dropping this section, you can deepen the shadows and lifting it brightens the shadows.
Highlights: On the right side of the curve, you'll find the highlights, which encompass the brightest parts of your image. Lifting this area allows you to brighten the highlights and dropping it darkens the highlights.
Mid-tones: Nestled between the shadows and highlights, the mid-tones occupy the heart of the curve. They contain the majority of the image's details and contribute to its overall balance. Fine-tuning the mid-tones helps you achieve the desired brightness and tonal harmony, setting the mood and aesthetic of your photo.
Mastering the Art of the Tone Curve
There is no wrong way to edit with the tone curve. However, the most common tone curve edit is the s-curve.
First, place a point on every fifth of the graph.
Next, lift the highlights and drop the shadows, increasing your contrast. The middle point acts as an anchor to ensure your midpoints aren't affected.
Lastly, lift the blacks and drop the whites until your image is exposed perfectly.
The s-curve increases contrast by manipulating highlights and shadows and soften images by lifting the black, adding drama and intrigue to your photographs.
