Mirrored vs mirrorless
What are mirrored cameras?
Mirrored cameras or DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) cameras combine the optics and mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor to take digital images. A reflex mirror sits at a 45-degree angle to reflect light into the viewfinder to give you a live view of your environment. When you take a picture, the mirror moves so light can hit the sensor and a photograph is captured.
What is a mirrorless camera?
Mirrorless cameras are cameras that don't use single-lens reflex mechanisms. Instead, the viewfinder has a LED (light emitting diode) screen, that displays a live view of the light hitting the camera sensor.
Why should you use a DSLR camera?
Optical Viewfinder- DSLR cameras use mirrors to reflect light into the viewfinder, giving you a live lag-free view of your environment, making it easier to shoot fast-moving subjects.
Battery life- Generally, DSLRs offer longer battery life than mirrorless cameras. The optical viewfinder consumes less power than the electronic displays used in mirrorless models, allowing for more extended shooting sessions.
Build Quality- Many DSLRs are built with robust materials and weather-sealed cameras can endure challenging environmental conditions, making them suitable for outdoor and adventure photography.
Why use mirrorless cameras?
Size and Weight- Without the need for a reflex mirror and optical viewfinder, mirrorless cameras are generally more compact and lightweight than DSLRs.
Speed- Since there's no mirror to move, mirrorless cameras are much faster than DSLR cameras and capture images at speeds over 25 FPS.
Electronic Viewfinder LCD Display-The digital display allows for real-time previews of how changes to settings like exposure, white balance, and aperture will affect the image.
Even though what type of camera you use comes down to personal preference, with the rate at which technology advances there is no real reason to use DSLR cameras anymore. Newer Electronic Viewfinders are completely lag-free and modern mirrorless cameras have solved the battery life issue and are even weather sealed.
