The greatest challenge in photography is drawing attention to your subject. Preventing distractions from drawing your viewers away from your subject is paramount in creating good images. But how can you do so?
Isolation is a compositional technique that draws attention to your subject by secluding it and placing it alone against a background.
How does isolation work?
The main reason we use isolation is to draw attention to your subject. By removing clutter, the photography composition is drastically improved, as unimportant elements are reduced to an out-of-focus blur, resulting in simple but textured background.
Using Isolation
There are many ways to isolate a subject, the most important of which is Blur. By blurring out your background you immediately separate your subject from it. To create that wonderful blur, all you have to do is increase the distance between the background and the subject. This pushes your background out of the range of focus (or depth of field) of your image creating blur.
In conclusion, composition using isolation will make any image better by creating images that direct viewers to your subject making images more engaging and entertaining. generally, isolation is created by blurring out the background however there are numerous ways to create isolation. So try isolating your images and watch as they improve!
